“No,” I said. “I mean the bill is yours.”<\/p>\n
The table went silent.<\/p>\n
I looked around at every face.<\/p>\n
“For years, I’ve paid because I wanted to help. But somewhere along the way, you stopped seeing it as help. You started seeing it as my responsibility.”<\/p>\n
Chris’s face turned red.<\/p>\n
“Can we not do this here?”<\/p>\n
“I’ve tried doing it privately,” I said. “Nobody listened.”<\/p>\n
His father stared at the envelope.<\/p>\n
I continued.<\/p>\n
“Tonight, everyone pays for what they ordered. I’ll cover Dad’s meal because it’s his birthday. Everything else belongs to the person who ordered it.”<\/p>\n
His aunt immediately protested.<\/p>\n
“But we always do it this way!”<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n
“Exactly.”<\/p>\n
The waiter returned.<\/p>\n
I handed him the envelope.<\/p>\n
“Please separate the checks.”<\/p>\n
Chris pulled me aside.<\/p>\n
“You embarrassed my family.”<\/p>\n
I looked at him.<\/p>\n
“No. Your family embarrassed themselves.”<\/p>\n
He didn’t answer.<\/p>\n
One by one, his relatives reluctantly pulled out their cards.<\/p>\n
The woman who had ordered the lobster suddenly complained about the price.<\/p>\n
The cousin with the expensive wine asked if the restaurant could remove it.<\/p>\n
The brother who supposedly left his wallet in the car somehow found it in his jacket.<\/p>\n
Nobody laughed.<\/p>\n
Nobody disappeared.<\/p>\n
For the first time, everyone paid.<\/p>\n
When we got home, Chris barely spoke.<\/p>\n
Finally, he said, “You could have warned me.”<\/p>\n
“I did,” I replied.<\/p>\n
“When?”<\/p>\n
“Every time I paid.”<\/p>\n
He looked away.<\/p>\n
Then, unexpectedly, he sighed.<\/p>\n
“My family really has been taking advantage of you.”<\/p>\n
I nodded.<\/p>\n
“I know.”<\/p>\n
The next month, his mother called about another family dinner.<\/p>\n
Before hanging up, she asked, “How are we handling the bill?”<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n
“Everyone pays for themselves.”<\/p>\n
There was a long silence.<\/p>\n
Then she said, “Fair enough.”<\/p>\n
That was the last time anyone assumed I would pay.<\/p>\n
And strangely enough, after the money stopped flowing from my wallet, something else changed too.<\/p>\n
