Just six months earlier, aircraft from these ships had participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Now, the Japanese Navy intended to seize Midway, draw the remaining American carrier fleet into battle, and destroy it.

But the Americans were waiting.

Thanks to intelligence gathered by Navy codebreakers, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz had learned enough about Japan’s plans to position American carriers near Midway before the Japanese attack began.

On the morning of June 4, Japanese aircraft struck the island. American defenders fought back, but the attack inflicted damage and cost the defenders aircraft and lives.

The Japanese strike had not destroyed Midway’s ability to resist, however. Their pilots reported that another attack would be needed.

That decision would prove critical.

As Japanese aircraft returned to their carriers, crews faced the difficult task of recovering planes, refueling aircraft, and preparing weapons for another mission. Meanwhile, Japanese commanders were becoming aware that American carrier forces were nearby.

American aircraft were already on their way.

From the carriers USS Enterprise, USS Hornet, and USS Yorktown, American squadrons launched to attack the Japanese fleet.

The first attacks were disastrous for many of the American airmen.

Torpedo bombers flew low over the water toward the Japanese ships, facing intense antiaircraft fire and Japanese fighter patrols. Many were shot down before they could inflict serious damage.

The losses were devastating.

But their attacks drew Japanese fighters down toward the sea and forced the defenders to respond to threats from multiple directions.

Then, as the morning advanced, American dive-bombers arrived over the Japanese carrier force.

Flying SBD Dauntless aircraft, the American pilots approached from above and plunged toward their targets.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., bombs struck the Japanese carriers.

The results were catastrophic.

Akagi, Kaga, and Sōryū were hit and set ablaze. Explosions and fires spread through the ships as burning fuel and armed aircraft intensified the damage.

Within minutes, three of Japan’s four frontline carriers had been crippled.

For the Japanese Navy, the disaster was almost unimaginable. Its carrier force had been central to the offensive power that had carried Japanese forces across the Pacific. Now, three of those ships were out of action in a single morning.

But one carrier remained.

Hiryū had escaped the initial attack.

Its aircraft launched counterstrikes against the American carrier USS Yorktown, hitting the ship with bombs and torpedoes. Yorktown suffered severe damage, but its crew fought to keep the carrier afloat.

For a time, the battle remained uncertain.

The Americans had inflicted a tremendous blow, but Hiryū was still capable of striking back.

Then American scouts located the remaining Japanese carrier.

Later that afternoon, dive-bombers from Enterprise attacked Hiryū. Their bombs struck the ship, starting fires and leaving it fatally damaged.

By the end of June 4, all four Japanese carriers had been crippled by American air attacks.

The fighting was not quite over. The damaged ships were abandoned or scuttled, and Hiryū sank on June 5. Akagi and Kaga were also scuttled after their crews could no longer save them. Sōryū had sunk during the night.

The loss of the four carriers was a devastating defeat for Japan.

Thousands of Japanese sailors and airmen were killed, including experienced naval aviators whose skills had been difficult to replace. The United States also suffered serious losses, including the carrier Yorktown, which was sunk by a Japanese submarine on June 7.

Midway was not a victory without cost.

But its strategic consequences were enormous.

The Japanese offensive had failed. The Imperial Japanese Navy had lost four of its most important fleet carriers, while the United States retained the ability to rebuild and strengthen its carrier forces.

The battle did not end the Pacific War, and Japan remained a formidable opponent. Fierce fighting continued across the Pacific for years.

Yet Midway marked a major turning point. The Japanese Navy’s ability to launch large-scale carrier offensives had been severely weakened, and American forces gained the opportunity to take the initiative.

The most remarkable part of the battle was not simply the destruction of four carriers.

It was how intelligence, timing, and the actions of many aircrews combined to create a decisive opportunity.

American codebreakers helped reveal the Japanese plan. Commanders positioned their carriers where they could respond. Torpedo squadrons attacked despite terrible losses, and dive-bomber crews seized a narrow window to strike.

No single moment explains the entire victory. Midway was the result of preparation, difficult decisions, courage, and chance.

On June 4, 1942, the Pacific War entered a new phase.

Four Japanese carriers that had helped project Japan’s naval power were lost, and the balance of the conflict began to shift.

The battle’s legacy is a reminder that even a powerful military force can be vulnerable when intelligence, timing, and battlefield decisions turn against it.

This is the story of the Battle of Midway—a battle fought over a small atoll that changed the course of the Pacific War.

You’re watching Battle Archives—where every battle tells a story.

Subscribe for more stories of strategy, courage, sacrifice, and the moments that shaped history.

On June 4, 1942, the fate of the Pacific War began to change in the skies above the Pacific Ocean.
