He fixed things around the house, made Sunday pancakes, came to every school event, and always remembered the little things that mattered to me.<\/p>\n<p>I never called him \u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes, secretly, I wanted to.<\/p>\n<p>After my mom died, Gary and I stayed in touch. We weren&#8217;t especially close anymore, but he still checked on me, remembered my birthday, and asked how work was going.<\/p>\n<p>Not close, but still family.<\/p>\n<p>At least, that&#8217;s what I thought.<\/p>\n<p>So this Father&#8217;s Day, I drove down to his house with a box of lemon bars\u2014my mom&#8217;s favorite\u2014and a card filled with everything I&#8217;d never been brave enough to say.<\/p>\n<p>I arrived early.<\/p>\n<p>As I walked toward the front door, I noticed the window was open.<\/p>\n<p>I was about to knock when I heard voices inside.<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>Gary was talking to someone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#8217;s coming today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A woman&#8217;s voice answered, \u201cAre you sure you want to tell her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart started pounding.<\/p>\n<p>Then Gary said quietly, \u201cShe deserves to know. I&#8217;ve kept this secret long enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer to the window.<\/p>\n<p>The woman was holding an old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized my mother immediately.<\/p>\n<p>But there was something else in the picture.<\/p>\n<p>A little boy stood beside her.<\/p>\n<p>And he looked exactly like me.<\/p>\n<p>I pushed the door open.<\/p>\n<p>Gary turned pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease,\u201d he whispered. \u201cLet me explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held up the photograph with trembling hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is that boy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gary&#8217;s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that years before my mother married him, she had discovered that my biological father had secretly left town and wanted nothing to do with us. Gary had known the truth from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Mom never told me,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wanted to protect you,\u201d Gary replied. \u201cAnd I promised her I&#8217;d never make you feel like you needed to choose between the man who gave you life and the man who raised you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the Father&#8217;s Day card still clutched in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came here to tell you something,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Gary looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I handed him the card.<\/p>\n<p>He opened it slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, I had written only one sentence:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for being my dad, even when I never called you Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gary covered his face and cried.<\/p>\n<p>Then he stood up and hugged me.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in my life, I hugged him back without hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHappy Father&#8217;s Day, Dad,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>He held me tighter.<\/p>\n<p>And somehow, saying that one word made all the years of silence disappear.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Father I Never Called Dad When I was 15, my mom married Gary.
